Black coffee cup on

               off-white kitchen table,

brimming, steaming

               in soft morning; sun

shafting through glass,

               casting shadows west on

off-white kitchen walls.

               Crescent halo of light

gleaming atop its oily umber

               face, glint of eye—

promising when full,

               promising when empty

to be fulfilled

               again.
