“The holy King David tells us that he lived always in the presence of God, when he uses the words: ‘I set the Lord always in my sight.’ Do the same thing, and raise your heart continually to God, without violently forcing yourself, but letting your mind lose itself in loving simplicity in this sovereign Divinity. Do not be distressed to find your thoughts so often distracted, owing to human weakness: try quickly to recollect yourself and offer yourself to God anew. If you have the courage to go through this combat without being shaken for some length of time, I venture to assure you that the custom will become second nature, and that not only will you no longer have any difficulty in recollection, but even that you will never give it up. You will be like the fish that cannot live out of water, and if it finds itself outside, does all that it can to return.”
