The Breaker

(Painting by Ravi Patel - found here)

“I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt
and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and
reluctant convert in all England.”
~C. S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy

1     A voice cries louder than the wailing wind
To break, smash, strike the boarded heart within.
To shatter all hopes and dreams built towering
On shores of sandy ground, all comes falling.
5     And fire, a flame, an arrow of the sharpest aim
Pierces me, a man, already dead and lame.
And I had thought I had repented, but still,
The arrow goes straight forward for the kill.
And loud, loud, and loud is my calling cry.
10   “Enough,” I whisper, whimper, but still the sky
Sends all its thunder, breaking, smashing, striking.
All strongholds erect are humbled. Burning
In a roar of a thousand waves from ancient days.
Till last, unwilling, I come willing and say,
15   “I believe.”
