Savage Sunset
O Father, if I love not life
~a Carthusian monk
In you, nor to share Christ’s death in you,
My heart’s a charnel-house: and more,
Death gnaws
the heart.
No Christ, no Cross, No Cross, no life.
No vehement heart, no hope, no locks
Wet with the drops of the night; yet more,
Death gnaws
the heart.
O Savage Sunset, my dawn, my life,
My Paradise unbound, my Stag
Leaping upon the mountains; no more
Death gnaws
the heart!
