The Resurrection

“Nothing is known of the life of the Master of Třeboň. His name refers to Třeboň in the Czech Republic, one of the few places where his work — or, rather, fragments of his work — survived. The power and vitality of The Resurrection make us aware of just how much we have lost. It is a highly unusual image: the guards are not asleep, as Scripture suggests. If the guards were sleeping, they have woken in astonishment as the luminous vertical of Christ rises from the dead.
Christ’s shroud is a vibrant vermillion that is echoed in the sky, spangled with golden stars, and in the livid wounds on his body. Raising his hand in benediction, he seems to have come through the stone of the sarcophagus, which remains resolutely shut, and he appears to be bringing the whole world of nature (the background is radiant with birds) into the freedom of his newly resurrected life.”

O God, who on this day,
through your Only Begotten Son,
have conquered death
and unlocked for us the path to eternity,
grant, we pray, that we who keep
the solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection
may, through the renewal brought by your Spirit,
rise up in the light of life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
— Amen.
