An apple sliced open
It’s seeds splayed out, immediately
Slides towards atrophy — oxygen itself
Turned enemy to its flesh — paints browns.
“Behold, I am making all things new” — New?
But how? When we feel our flesh, exposed, raw,
Rapidly oxygenized to bitter hues, decay so swift
We miss its coming, yet feel its pull towards death.
Ah, death, where is your sting? But it stings. Lord,
How it stings. Where is the new you are making?
I see it not in the lilies of the valley, though we
Sit on the edge of spring. I hear it not in the
Birds’ swing songs, for death halts not
For a tune. So where is it, Oh God,
The newness of all things?
