if you turn up the music

you won’t hear the sirens

if you close the windows

you can’t really smell the smoke

pull down the blinds

and you won’t see the rubble

if you don’t answer the doorbell

don’t pick up the phone

turn on the tv    read the newspaper

if you dance    or stand still

if you sink your head deep into bathwater

you might begin to forget

in any case

there won’t be any distractions

you can weep alone
