Cannot Express

(Macro photo - close-up view of colored ink by Jordan Mudrack - found here)

After the attempt, when again
he finds the words a bit too thin
to satisfy the hunger of what

he set out to say, he wouldn’t
say surprised but still aware
of the grumble down there

demanding to be filled. The paper
crumples like a metaphor
beneath the weight of all it couldn’t

figure. Go figure. But wait—
hear that? Here comes the groaning
which is the pulse of the poem,

interceding for the part of him
too deep to plumb
with a frail linguistic light.
